The concept of repentance is vastly misunderstood. It has nothing to do with a guilt trip. Or fear. Repentance is about repairing prior misdeeds by feeling the pain that we’ve caused to others and by abolishing the actual negative trait responsible for their hurt.
Through the power of repentance our souls journey back to the precise moment prior to our spiritual infraction. The damage is then undone, provided we have meditated with deep remorse to eradicate the character trait that originally induced our offense.
So how does this alleviate the suffering of the victim of our crime?
Kabbalah says there are no victims. The person who was injured by our misdeed warranted this negative act as a result of a misdeed that he or she committed at a prior time.
Our own pain and repentance are not the result of hurting an innocent victim. Rather, our remorse pertains to our being chosen as the “executioner” of the sentence, the deliverer of a judgment that was already decreed against this person.
And the pain we agree to take on is used to cleanse the nasty trait that led us to be a courier for wrongdoing in the first place.
A person who is spiritually pure and righteous will never be selected to execute judgment against a fellow human being.
MEDITATION
Recall any negative deeds from your past. Reflect on some of your more unpleasant traits. Feel the pain of the people you have hurt. Ask the Light to eradicate all your negative attributes. The force called repentance spiritually repairs your past sins and diminishes the dark side of your nature.
In The Zohar: “When one is born, he is given a soul from the side of the pure beast.” And he interprets that his animate soul, too, agrees to be a servant of the Creator. “If he is further rewarded, he is given a soul of the Holy Wheels.” This means that he has a soul that always longs, and it rolls from place to place. Like an ever-turning wheel, it turns and rolls to cling to the Kedusha (Sanctity).
