A New Way to See: Givers, Takers, and the Light We Carry

We live in a world that loves to put people in boxes. We are labeled from a young age—by the color of our skin, the country our ancestors came from, how much money our parents have, or which school we go to. These labels seem important. They are the “various differences” we have, and too often, they are used to separate us. They build walls where there should be bridges, creating a world of competition where we are taught to look out for ourselves first.
But what if there is a simpler way? A way to see each other that doesn’t divide, but unites? A way so fundamental that we often overlook it in our search for more complicated answers. This way is not about what we look like or what we have, but about what we do with what we have been given. It is about classifying ourselves not by what we take, but by what we give.
Imagine for a moment that every one of us has a personal economy of kindness. We all receive gifts—time, love, attention, help, knowledge, and even material things. The true measure of a person is not found in the pile of what they have received, but in the flow of what they give away from that pile. This creates two simple, powerful categories: the Givers and the Takers.
The Givers are the engines of goodness in the world. They are the ones who listen when you need to talk, who share their lunch, who offer a word of encouragement, who use their talents to help others. They operate on a simple principle: what I have been given is not just for me; it is a gift to be shared. In this system, Givers are the most esteemed people. They are not rich in money, but in spirit. They build trust, create community, and radiate a positive energy that lifts everyone around them.
The Takers, on the other hand, live in a state of constant consumption. They soak up energy, resources, and attention but rarely give anything back. They operate from a place of scarcity, fearing that if they give, they will have less. But in hoarding the light, they only succeed in sitting in the dark. They are not villains to be hated, but often lost souls to be pitied and prayed for, for they are missing the very thing that makes life joyful: connection.
This is where the most beautiful part comes in. This system of “Givers and Takers” completely erases the old, divisive labels of race and ethnicity. It introduces a new way of seeing—not in terms of black and white, but in terms of light and dark.
When we speak of “light,” we are talking about the inner quality of a person—their generosity, compassion, honesty, and love. These are the “shiny people.” When we speak of “dark,” we are talking about the inner void—the selfishness, greed, and hatred that exist when the light is absent.
And here is the ultimate truth: light will always obliterate darkness. This is not a violent act, but a natural one. You cannot bring a flashlight into a dark room and have the darkness “win.” The darkness simply ceases to exist where the light shines. In the same way, a community built on giving will naturally overwhelm a system built on taking. Hate cannot survive where love is actively given. Greed cannot thrive where generosity is the currency. This is the spiritual law that governs our hearts.
When we choose to be Givers, we are not just being “nice.” We are aligning ourselves with the ultimate Giver, God. We are participating in His work. When we give, we are acting in His image, and our gift, no matter how small, is ultimately “all for The Giver.” This removes pride and comparison. We are not giving to be better than someone else; we are giving as an act of worship and gratitude.
This simple, profound shift in perspective changes everything. It means your value is not in what you look like, but in the light you carry. It means your purpose is not to accumulate, but to circulate goodness. And if we all lived by this one rule—to give from what we have received—we would see the end of the wars in our hearts, in our schools, and in our world. It would be the end of war because we would finally understand that we are all on the same team, all connected, all called to be shining lights for one another in a world that desperately needs the glow.
